Just compiling the driver as a module is the way to go if you don't
want to recompile your kernel.

However, the driver needs at least kernel 2.4.23.  It does not work
with an earlier kernel.  You may want to check whether SuSE offers
a pre-packaged upgrade to 2.4.23 or 2.4.24 on its update site so that
you don't need to recompile a kernel.
