Oh, and if I just try and force insert the module, it fails to load (of 
course) with:

FATAL: Error inserting prism54 
(/lib/modules/2.6.0-test9/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/prism54/prism54.ko): 
Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

and dmesg confirms:

prism54: Unknown symbol iw_handler_set_spy
prism54: Unknown symbol iw_handler_get_thrspy
prism54: Unknown symbol wireless_send_event
prism54: Unknown symbol iw_handler_get_spy
prism54: Unknown symbol iw_handler_set_thrspy

so I suspect I've just got something mucked in my patched kernel.
