I just started testing my SMC2802W as an AP with 802.11b-client and 
I'm also seeing a lot of packet loss with a ping. Haven't seen the 
patern yet, but the last results where compatible with what you saw: 
20% loss with a ping every second.

All I wanted to say here is: me too!
