thanks for the quick reply.
gotcha! i wont. wasnt really sure where this would have belonged. until n unless i contribute to the project, ill keep posting as a user. :)

i didnt know that APs in ad-hoc mode do not send their essids. hmm. if that were the case, then how is it that sniffers like kismet pick up their names (yeah, i checked on it, and it did list the names of the ad-hox).

i thought that the 'monitor' mode on the orinocos would be what i shoulda been lookin at, and got it set up to call using 'iwpriv'.
there are a coupla things i noticed there. unlike a sniffer listing all APs (infrastructure/ad-hoc) that transmit beacons, if i have to monitor using ioctls via 'iwpriv', i have to specify the channel to listen to. for instance, i would have to do a 'iwpriv <interface> monitor <set_val> <channel>'.
if i do the above, it would start listening in on that channel - i was trying to look at what tcpdump gives - and it seems to work, albeit without much information about the AP which has formed the cell. if i dont list the channel, well ...

so, thats also a problem. like, how would you go about scanning for all 'possible' points regardless of channel, mode, race/color ... ?

thanks again for your inputs (and im glad to know the GT is progressing nicely - it seems better than the card im using right now, and ill be getting one for use on this again.)
