I figured out my problem with the help of Andre Duclos.  I had to
comment out the "iwconfig $DEVICE key off" in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-wireless.  Maybe something like this
should go into an FAQ.

So, now I am reporting success with:
  SMC2835w Cardbus card
  Fedora Core 1
  Custom 2.4.23 kernel
  Latest firmware from SMC

Thanks for all the work on the driver!  Now I don't have to pay the $20
for Driverloader.
