Yes I did both.
I believe I edited the top level Makefile(!)

I thought so on Fedora Core 1. I could be wrong. Certainly Red Hat use
it and it was mentioned in the release notes (
http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/release-notes/ ) but maybe it is only
needed for the Red Hat add-ons like nptl or maybe it was only for 2.4.22
and perhaps 2.4.23 doesn't need it.
