Dear list,

Following Luis's advice, i've started to work in the XH8196 usb code. My
arch repo is the usual one, you can have a look at :

http://gxaafoot.homelinux.org/cgi-bin/archzoom.cgi/jean-baptiste.note@m4x.org--libre/XH8196--devo--0--LATEST

but it's also on the free mirror.

It compiles cleanly on 2.4 and 2.6. I haven't tested it yet, because i
don't have the device i need to test it (recent wg111). Joerg, can you
remember the Serial numbers or something that i could see on the device
you had in hand, so that i could buy one being sure it's a
"second-generation" ?

If someone has the device and wants to test it, it'd be cool, but you'll
need to find your way through the code, because you'll *have to* do some
modifications. Beware, too, because the licence for the intersil code is
not really nice.

Alternatively, if some Paris-living user of the wanadoo LiveBox could
lend me his XG703A... -- i can buy another dongle in exchange, but i
don't want to spend my money on something i'm not sure is the thing i
need :)

Why did i do that ? Well, reverse-engeneering with only usb logs is
painfully slow ( well, i'll ask questions here in the next few days,
because i'm stuck... ). I tried to find some other ways to make
advances:

* objdump -D of the available softmac lib is painfull too, and i can't
seem to find some good decompiler for linux. (one to which i could
feed function prototypes and structure definitions and that would lay
out everything nicely). i've tried uncc (doesn't work), erc
(pityfull), and boomerang (precompiled binary doesn't work, CVS won't
  compile)

* using the closed-source hal driver in XH8196, we may have more precise
ideas about what the data packets on the wire mean (feed this to the
hal, and look at what it sends to the device). Additionally, this
driver seems to allow the Host AP mode of operation (the windows
  driver doesn't).

So Luis, i don't know what your relations with conexant are at the
moment, but updated, even closed-source, softmac code could help us, i
think...

Greetings,
JB
