Looks like a firmware bug, you may try with another version. Ping to itself
doesn't touch the driver, maybe the iwconfig failure or iwevent could be used to
workaround this.

To debug this, you will need another card running in monitor mode to see what
exactly happens in the air, iwevent and driver compiled with debugging.
