It is in the specification of the SMC2802W, dont know about others, but I guess
it is requirement of the chip. This is pretty common among the wireless cards.
Rumors say that the main reason is the higher maximum current allowed by PCI
2.2. The SMC2802W doesnt work in three different PCI 2.1 motherboards I tried.
Intel 8xx and Via Apollo 133 and newer should have PCI 2.2, dont know about the
other manufacturers.
Intel chipsets are rumored to be least buggy regarding PCI. I can confirm that
from my experience, for example bt8x8 video grabber drops lines (or worse they
get writen elsewhere in the memory) when there is another busmaster running
(for ex. hdd in DMA mode) in a motherboard with a Via chipset, that doesnt
happen with an Intel chipset.
