Hi there,

it's newbie time. After reading an article in the German Linux-Magazine
this month, I got myself a SMC2835W an thought getting this toy to run
should be pretty easy. - Well, that was the theory.

My System is a PIII-1200 with MDK 9.1

What I did:
- took a 2.4.22 vanilla kernel
- patched it to 2.4.23-rc2
- patched it with yesterdays (2003-11-20) prism 54 patch
- build kernel with hotplug and prism54 support
- updated hotplug to 2003_08_05 to have firmware support
- downloaded firmware 1.0.4.3 and put it in hotplug directory
- got libiw26 and wireless-tools-26
- adapted /etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts

Status: - some partial success=20
- can scan for AP:

tambala:~ # iwlist eth1 scanning
Warning: Driver for device eth1 has been compiled with version 16
of Wireless Extension, while this program is using version 15.
Some things may be broken...

eth1 Scan completed :
          Cell 01 - Address: 00:C0:49:D9:73:0A
                 ESSID:"myNet"
                 Mode:Master
                 Encryption key:off
                 Frequency:2.447GHz
                 Quality:75/0 Signal level:-69 dBm Noise level:-144dBm

- can enter managed mode:
iwconfig eth1 mode Managed
=09
- NIC "Link" LED lights up and I get a route:

169.254.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 0 0 0 eth1

(However my AP is configured for 192.168.2.x; the scan revealed no other
wireless nets)

- ifconfig shows an interface
eth1 Protokoll:Ethernet Hardware Adresse 00:04:E2:80:A1:F2
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:21 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          Kollisionen:0 Sendewarteschlangenl=E4nge:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:3348 (3.2 Kb)
          Interrupt:5

Other:
- last night I got somewhere an error message telling me that my
wireless-tools-26 seem to work with WE15, but my prism54 module uses
WE16. Tried to build wireless-tools-26 myself without any success.
Although I used the hints regarding the headers in the readme, I get
tons of parse errors.

Logging:
- on insertion of the Cardbus NIC I get in my syslog (see at the bottom)

OKAY. That's how far I managed on my own. Now I need HELP!

Any hints as how to get this babe on air are wellcome.

Thanks

Stefan
