I still hope that either firmware is doing badly in 11b mode
or we don't know how to setup card for 11b,
besause if I assume for a moment that prism54 just has
lower sensitivity, then:

This is my prism54:
00:04:e2:64:15:e5: last_rx: silence=156 signal=175 rate=10
As I said, barely does 2Mbit/s

This is Dlink DWL520 (prism2.5):
00:05:5d:fa:56:20: last_rx: silence=156 signal=171 rate=110
I just ssh'ed into it, it has "Link Quality:32/92",
tx/rx counters:
tx[1M]=0        tx[2M]=0        tx[5.5M]=0      tx[11M]=18121
rx[1M]=123      rx[2M]=225      rx[5.5M]=485    rx[11M]=21993

It's not 'lower' sensitivity. It's 'hopelessly low' sensitivity.

BTW, DLink is not the best card around, Senao/Engenius stuff
said to be way better wrt sensitivity. If we lose even
to DLink... oh well :(
