I'll be happy to try the latest source/patch, however I deliberately chose to 
use the Mandrake cooker 2.6.1 source rpm so I would not have to apply patches.

Kernel 2.6.1 has introduced it's own problems though, such as not being able to 
mount my Windows partitions and bizarrly, not being able to open a terminal 
within KDE or use any "su" utility. I did discover that a different dhcp client 
worked (dhcpcd) where dhclient didn't. Anyhow, I don't know if smbmount causes 
the same problem as NFS.

I'll try the latest 2.4 kernel, but it will take time before I figure out again 
(I tried unsuccessfully this summer) how to patch and compile.
