backport firmware_class or give it up. This is not worth trying, because
it bloats the code and such code will not accepted for kernel inclusion.

If you worry about the kernel's of the distributions, contact them and
tell them that they should include firmware_class. For example SuSE
already does this for its 2.4.21 kernel.
