2.6.8.1 has the major fixes.
Have you got the latest BIOS for the laptop ?
Have you got the latest firmware for the AP ?

Weird, I don't have any problem transferring multi-GB
either with PCI or PCMCIA.
Just setting up a 2.6.8.1 now.
